Department of Law
» Introduction

The Department of Law is a teaching and research centre at School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kashmir. It was started in 2011 under the coordinatorship of Prof. S.M.A. Qadri, retired professor from Faculty of Law, University of Kashmir. Then, in 2012, Prof. Mehraj Uddin Mir joined the department as Professor who became first formal Head of the Department and first Dean of School of Legal Studies at the University. Later, in 2015, he became the Vice Chancellor of Central University of Kashmir. There are faculty members with distinctive academic backgrounds and specializations contributing towards the widening and enrichment of the academic compass of the department. Presently, department offers the  following programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels:   

Integrated BALLB

The department offers five year integrated degree programme in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (BALLB). Students after passing Higher Secondary Examination Part Two/10+2 become eligible to seek admission in this course. The students are admitted to the programme through all India level Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET). Students in this programme are imparted knowledge in different fields of humanities and social sciences like english, economics, political science and sociology along with a comprehensive study of various domains in law. This programme in last few semesters offers practical courses on clinical legal education through court visits (lower as well as higher judiciary), legal literacy programmes and project work based on doctrinal as well as empirical (field based) studies. A degree in law, especially BALLB programme, provides myriad career opportunities in public sector as well as private organizations. There are excellent job prospects for law graduates not only in government judicial/civil services or academics but also in business, industry and the traditional careers of barrister or solicitor in private practice.

The Master of Laws (LLM) is a two-year postgraduate degree programme. It involves both taught and research components. Students are required to complete certain core and few elective courses in addition to one research project and a short dissertation work. The programme specializes in criminal justice system. It is designed for students who are interested in exploring and developing new critical perspectives on major contemporary national and international debates in this area. Students having a bachelors degree in law are eligible to apply for this programme. Every year, the admission to this programme is done through CUCET.


The department also offers the research degree programme at doctoral level. The department focuses on varied research areas depending upon the specializations and interests of the faculty members. Scholars are admitted through CUCET subject to the availability of vacancy with eligible supervisors.
