Standing Committee on Urban Development members take stock of CUK construction work
Ganderbal, May 27: Two of the Parliament Members of Standing Committee on Urban Development Thursdaytook stock of the ongoing construction work of the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) campus at Ganderbal.
Rajya Sabha members, Mr. Rangasayee Ramakrisna and Mr. S Thangavelu were briefed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar and Controller of Examinations, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar about the work on setting up of Pre Engineered Buildings. Deans of Schools and Heads and Coordinators of different departments were also present on the occasion.
While briefing the Parliamentarians, Prof. Mehraj ud Din said the construction firms, who have been assigned the job to complete the project are facing daunting task as the land given for establishment of the University has extremely low load bearing capacity. “The concerned agencies faced several hardships and operational difficulties during pile work on construction of PEBs and they are expecting difficult times ahead when they will start work on the permanent structures,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din told the visiting Rajya Sabha members.
He said that resistance from some locals coupled with poor land quality is the main reason for inordinate delay in the construction of both the PEBs and permanent buildings, adding that due to the delay, there has been cost escalation on the project, which has already been taken up at different levels in the Human Resource Development Ministry including the Statutory bodies of the varsity.
Mr. Rangasayee Ramakrisna and Mr. S Thangavelu underscored the need and asked the officials of the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) to expedite the work and complete the project within the stipulated time.
