Nitasha Kaul interacts with DCJ students

Srinagar, Jan 3: Department of Convergent Journalism (DCJ), Central University of Kashmir (CUK), organized an interaction session with author and academician, Dr. Nitasha Kaul on Monday.

Nitasha spoke about host of issues, including media and conflict discourses, power and structures of violence. She also shared her experiences as an academician.

Nitasha impressed upon the students to use new avenues including internet-based media for narrating stories that the mainstream media overlooks.

Citing example of the recently held Presidential election in the United States, she said “even false information, widely circulated on social media, had a bearing on the poll results.” “The challenge is how you make people want to know the truth… rather than letting them find incorrect sources,” she said.

Nitasha emphasized on the role of language in mass media, saying that words have varied connotations. “The language that you use in the stories will not merely reflect the world, but will also create the world,” she said.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din Mir, thanked Nitasha for sparing time to interact with the students. He hailed her academic contributions and invited the speaker for more purposeful workshops and sessions in the University.
