School of Legal Studies celebrates Jashn-e-Qist-o-Meezan
Srinagar, Oct 31: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir today asked the students of the Law department to ensure justice to the people, particularly from lower class, approaching the Court of law.
“Always uphold the truth and ensure that no innocent is convicted and no criminal and wrongdoer is acquitted ,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din said while addressing the students during the Ist Annual day “Jashn-e-Qist-o-Meezan,” organised by the Department of Law, School of Legal Studies, at Nowgam-I academic block of the University.
He asked the final year students of L.L.B, who are passing out from the university in few months to help the poor people seeking justice in their respective cases. “The affluent class and influential people can afford capable and competent lawyers to plead their cases, but the downtrodden people are unable to do that and hence justice eludes them most of the time,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir said, adding that the lawyers are torch bearers of the society and had a huge responsibility in making the society crime free.
CUK VC asked the students to study and subsequently work with honesty, commitment and dedication in order to reach top echelons of power. “Some of the bright students of Law Department of University of Kashmir are presently working in Supreme Court, High Court and also as attorney in the US Justice Department, which is always a moment of proud for the teachers who have taught them,” he said.
Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir said that he was delighted to learn that some of the students of CUK’s Law Department have qualified competitive examinations and other judicial exams. He also asked the Head of the Department, Dr. Sheikh Showkat to prepare a proposal about starting of B.Tech-LLB course in the varsity. Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir also assured the students and the faculty members of redressing their grievances.
Head of the Department, Dr. Sheikh Showkat, described Annual Day as the first mega event organised by the School of Legal Studies. He said that the CUK’s Law Department has the distinction of teaching updated curriculum in Law to the students and some of the subjects are being taught for the first time in Valley. He said the department has organised three conferences and several guest lectures by eminent jurists from the country and abroad, adding that a legal literacy campaign was also undertaken by the Department students for the people living in the vicinity of the varsity. Dr. Sheikh Showkat also hailed the State judiciary for providing all the support and cooperation during the internship of the students.
Deans of various Schools, Heads and Coordinators of different Departments and Director Students Welfare were also present on the occasion.
Assistant Prof. Mrs Gulafroz Jan presented the vote of thanks while as Mr. Muhammad Arooj of the Law Society also spoke on the occasion.
The students of the Department also enthralled the audience with different cultural programmes and skits.
