CUK distributes relief cheques among flood-hit students, employees

Srinagar, Jan 6: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Tuesday distributed relief cheques among the flood-affected students and employees of the varsity in the second phase of the initiative to lend helping hand to the victims.                                             



CUK officiating Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din at the request of Coordination Committee of the University employees handed over the amount to the beneficiaries, which included 98 students and 15 employees at a function held at the Transit Campus of the university.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor lauded the students for their courage in the face of the devastating floods that hit Kashmir in September last year and emphasized the need to reach out the victims.

“The students suffered on many counts yet they showed exemplary courage to cope with the situation and appeared in the examinations in time,” he said.

University employees on their own initiative had constituted a committee to pool voluntary relief money from their contributions and prepared a list of the beneficiaries after ascertaining veracity of the claims made for monetary help.

Prof. S Fayyaz, Mr. Reyaz Rufai and Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain, as members of the Coordination Committee had been given the responsibility by the contributors to distribute the amount.

On the occasion, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar shared the experience of being stranded at the Transit Campus along with the hostel boarders during the floods. He lauded the initiative of the University employees to reach out to the needy students and fellow employees in the wake of the floods.

He applauded the faculty and students for putting up a brave front after the flood fury while restoring the academic activity of the University. Prof. S. Fayyaz, highlighted the role which is supposed to be played by the common citizens in helping each other and the role played by the youth and fellow citizens during flood deluge, has been worth appreciation.

Controller of Examinations/Finance Officer, Dr. N A Gilkar also spoke on the occasion. Director, Students Welfare, Dr. Fayaz A Nikka conducted the proceedings.
