CUK V-C inaugurates workshop to frame curriculum for integrated Maths prog
Srinagar, Apr 11: The Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir today inaugurated a three-day workshop organised by the Department of Mathematics to deliberate on the course structure and syllabus for 5-year integrated B.Sc-M.Sc programme in mathematics, being launched by the varsity from the upcoming academic session.
Prof. Abdul Gani, Dean School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Registrar, Dr. Aftab Hussain Shah, Mathematics Department Coordinator, Prof. A P Singh former Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Rajasthan, Prof. N M Khan from the Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. S Punaswamy, from ISI Chennai, Prof. S D Sharma, from the Central University of Jammu, experts from other state universities, Deans, Head and Coordinators of other varsity departments and students of CUK were also present during the inaugural session, held at Nowgam-I academic block of the varsity.
Addressing the participants, Prof. Mehraj ud Din said the university has received an overwhelming response from the students intending to pursue the 5-year integrated B.Sc-M.Sc programme in mathematics. “The main aim and objective of holding this workshop is to frame an exceptional curriculum for the programme so that the students could get complete knowledge about the subject,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din said. Describing Mathematics as one of the important subject in the Science, he said, the integrated programme offered would be able to hone the mathematical and analytical skills of the students. Prof. Mehraj ud Din said complimented the department for holding the workshop.
Dr. Abdul Gani, Dean School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, while speaking on the occasion, underscored the need to make the integrated B.Sc-M.Sc programme in mathematics, different from other related courses. “It has to be a programme with a difference which can set an example for other institutions to follow the same pattern,” Dr. Gani said, adding that the experts should discuss and deliberate every detail related to the curriculum to make it more comprehensive and beneficial for the students community. He asked the experts to suggest ways and means to conduct the programme effectively in the varsity.
Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Registrar, while welcoming the participants said that with the introduction of B.Sc-M.Scprogramme in mathematics, the varsity was now offering four integrated programmes and had the distinction of becoming the first university in North India to offer these programmes. He said that mathematics has a huge significance in academics as it is used in in almost all the subjects. Prof. Zargar said the university will make every effort to provide all the basic facilities to the students admitted in this new programme.

After the inaugural, the experts had a closed door discussion about the curriculum and other aspects of the programme.
