Varsity holds 5th ESE workshop on Examinations and Evaluation Reforms
Srinagar, May 12: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir today said the constraints, bottlenecks and difficulties faced by the varsity won’t affect its march on the academic front.
“As on date, the varsity has conducted a series of workshops, seminars, conferences and other academic activities of both national and international level smoothly and has received overwhelming response and praise from the participants,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir said while delivering the presidential address in the inaugural-cum-interactive session of the 5th Post-ESE Workshop on Examinations and Evaluation Reforms: Contemporary Challenges & Responses organised by the Examination and Evaluation Wing (EEW) of the CUK at Nowgam-I academic block of the varsity.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Coordinator, Prof. N A Nadeem, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Controller of Examinations, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar, Deans of other Schools, Head and Coordinators of different departments, faculty members and students were also present on the occasion.
Prof. Mehraj ud Din said the dropout rate in the CUK was insignificant. He said that the research component in the varsity was increasing and a separate Directorate of Research and Development has been constituted in this regard.
Prof. Mehraj ud Din said that he has worked with Prof. Jalees A. Khan Tareen, in different capacities in the University of Kashmir. He hailed the contribution made by Prof. Jalees A. Khan Tareen on academics, research, teaching-learning and administrative fronts.
He said that there is a convergence between the senior faculty and young assistant professors in the CUK. He said that with the support of senior faculty, the varsity is moving on right directions, adding that with this pace the university shall be in a position to figure in the list of world class universities.
Prof. Jalees A. Khan Tareen, who was the chief guest on the occasion, while delivering the key note address on “Parameters of World Class Universities” in his presentation, highlighted the measures, ways and means to be adopted by the varsities in order to be among the top ranked universities in the world. Prof Tareen said the characteristics of world class universities are Critical Mass of Students and faculty; multi discipline campuses with wide choice of programmes and courses; flexibility of choice of courses with interdisciplinary learning options; diversity of students; flexibility in faculty and student mobility; diversity of faculty and academic freedom to faculty; thrust on Research, experiential learning, State of the Art Laboratories, and Library with universal access to information; robust Self-appraisal and stake holder feedback mechanisms; integration of Programs (Under Graduate and Post Graduate); institutional collaboration and network; huge fund flow from private endowments, alumni and corporates; participatory governance and continuity in policies; complete trust between Administration and Academia; minimum bureaucratic interference into Academic creativity and ideas and openness and courage to experiment with new ideas and out of the box thinking.
He said that university makes a mark at international level through its research output, innovations and inventions.
In his welcome address, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, described Prof. Jalees Ahmad Khan Tareen as an academician and administrator par excellence. Prof Tareen left an indelible mark and footprints due to his dynamic management and administrative capabilities in the institutes of higher learning including the University of Kashmir, Pondicherry University and B.S. Abdur Rahman University of Science & Technology, Prof. Zargar said adding that Prof. Tareen pioneered the introduction of novel methods in the academic and administration which took these institutions to newer heights. “He played a significant role to create initiatives that paved the way for these institutions to achieve A Grade from NAAC,” he added. Prof. Tareen introduced several new and innovative programmes in the University of Kashmir, Prof. Zargar said.
Registrar also gave a detailed account about the establishment of the Central University of Kashmir and programmes offered by the varsity. He said besides traditional courses, the varsity has flagship programmes in Tourism, IT, Convergent Journalism, Teacher Training, integrated Science programmes and B.Voc programmes. He added that the University was trying hard to carve a niche in the competitive environment despite all odds and hardships.
Earlier, Dean School of Education, Prof. N A Nadeem gave a detailed profile of Prof. Jalees Ahmad Khan Tareen.
Controller of Examinations, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Gilkar conducted the programme proceedings and dwelt about the main and objective of holding the workshop. Assistant Registrar Finance and Purchase, Mr. Faisal Irshad proposed the vote of thanks.
Later, during the technical session, Assistant Prof. Department of IT, Mr. Zahoor Ahmad Najar and Consultant ITSS, Mr. Irfan Ahmad gave a presentation on “Online CIA Test and Evaluation,” and a group exercise was also conducted for the faculty members.
