Prof. Raghuvendra delivers online lecture in CUK:

Ganderbal, July 9: Prof. Raghuvendra Kumar Mishra, Director Institute of Public Enterprises delivered an online lecture on "Funding For Research in Higher Education in India" in Central University of Kashmir.

Prof. Mishra said that Higher education has seen an unprecedented growth in India. “Even though there has been an exponential increase in the number of institutions of higher learning, the quality of education has not improved much.” He observed that public expenditure on higher education has “decreased considerably.”

He underlined the pressing need to create and develop ideas and skills for evolving efficient policy options. “This could be achieved only if there was a substantial investment in higher education, but, the passion for such investments in cultivating human capital has decreased”, Prof Mishra marked.

He stressed upon strengthening the links among universities, governments, administrative units and society, in order to make universities more relevant and help in enacting efficient public policies. He also emphasized on creation of specialties within the departments in the universities and to collaborate with other institutions. Prof Mishra said, "We as researchers should believe in gradual progression rather than taking shortcuts". He also suggested doing away with individualism in research terming it as a collective effort.

He also pointed out that academic leadership in Indian Universities is very weak and called for an end to the over-reliance of universities on the government. To achieve this end he suggested that the alumni must contribute financially towards their respective alma mater.

Later on, Prof Mishra answered the questions raised by the participants.

Head, Department of Economics and Dean, Prof G.M. Bhat hosted the lecture.
